Until Vanguard, my relationship with shooters has simmered the last few years. I used to love them. Loved those AA and AAA shooters. I loved CoD 2 – the house-to-house fighting still jostles inside my gaming memories for prime position.
I loved Wolfenstein and Rise of the Triad and Doom and Quake and Singularity and even Timeshift. I’ve enjoyed quite a few Calls of Duty. I even got sent to LA to preview Black Ops 3.
We played MW3 on the morning of my wedding to take our minds off the day. But since then, I’ve just kinda . . . not played many.

Forget your Modern Warfares, this year its time for Call of Duty, Black Ops : Cold War. What a mouthful, that said, you can’t go through Silly Season without a new CoD can you?
Its been a decade since Black Ops first joined the roster, opening ups that whole Treyarch vs Infity Ward fan service argument. Much like the even numbered Star Trek movies it all comes down to taste. Black Ops for me back in the day was a hot mess, the campaign tried too hard to be clever. Throwing hallucinations and reveals at you in artillery style, it didn’t really do it for my taste. Some of the action pieces were superb, a lot of the story elements were forgettable. That was a decade ago, we don’t talk about the things we did then.

For as long as anyone can remember, the relationship between the video games industry and mainstream media has been riddled with misapprehension. Whenever games are involved in News stories, they’re often antagonistic or misrepresent the medium, usually said ‘articles’ come in conjunction with a Rockstar Games release, when we get the obligatory claims that violent video games make kids violent.
Today, I wanted to focus on the a recent example of a game/media clash that involves a specific game that is rumored to feature very realistic depictions of war.
That game is, of course, the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019).
A reboot of the original Modern Warfare game, the new COD is set to release on the 25th of October, but Infinity Ward has already treated fans and the media to trailers that show off the game’s new graphic engine and direction. And it’s that last part, the new direction, that has people excited, including me.

When Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was announced, and it was revealed that it would be the first Call of Duty game ever to not feature a single player campaign, I will admit, I drew a breath in surprise.
If it wasn’t for 2018’s God of War, Spider-Man and Read Dead releases, I would have taken this omission of a campaign as a clear hint that singleplayer games are getting ‘Fortnited’ out of existence. But no, it is now clear that Activision have had to priorities development resources to try and jump on the Battle Royale train, while the getting is good.
